7:3 Now four men with a skin disease ¹  were sitting at the entrance of the city gate. They said to one another, “Why are we just sitting here waiting to die? ²

7:5 So they started toward ³  the Syrian camp at dusk. When they reached the edge of the Syrian camp, there was no one there.

7:7 So they got up and fled at dusk, leaving behind their tents, horses, and donkeys. They left the camp as it was and ran for their lives.

7:16 Then the people went out and looted the Syrian camp. A seah ⁴  of finely milled flour sold for a shekel, and two seahs of barley for a shekel, just as the Lord had said they would. ⁵

8:19 But the Lord was unwilling to destroy Judah. He preserved Judah for the sake of ⁶  his servant David to whom he had promised a perpetual dynasty. ⁷

16:5 At that time King Rezin of Syria and King Pekah son of Remaliah of Israel attacked Jerusalem. ¹²  They besieged Ahaz, ¹³  but were unable to conquer him. ¹⁴

[8:19]  ⁷ tn Heb “just as he had promised to give him and his sons a lamp all the days.” The metaphorical “lamp” symbolizes the Davidic dynasty; this is reflected in the translation.

Elsewhere when the Niphal infinitive of לָחָם (lakham) follows the verb יָכֹל (yakhol), the infinitive appears to have the force of “prevail against.” See Num 22:11; 1 Sam 17:9; and the parallel passage in Isa 7:1.
